Aurora Police Respond to Crashes, a Domestic Violence Arrest and Scam Reports This Fall

Crashes A crash on West Garfield Road on Aug. 25 sent officers to the area near Starbucks after a passerby reported seeing a teenager struck by a car. Officers determined the teen was riding an electric bike and rode into a black sedan that was pulling into a parking space. He was not injured. A hit and run followed on Aug. 30 near North Chillicothe Road. A resident at an apartment complex told officers a white sedan sideswiped her car and left the area. She rode with an officer to retrace the path of the other vehicle, which ended in a nearby grocery store parking lot. The car was not located. During the same stretch of time, a customer at the store fell and hit his head, an unrelated incident officers also handled. Domestic Violence and Harassment Officers arrested a man on Moneta Avenue on Aug. 31 after a woman said she was assaulted at the address and then walked to a nearby gas station to get away. She told officers he punched her and slammed her against a wall. He was taken into custody, and the woman was given a victims rights packet. Several harassment complaints came in during the period. On Aug. 28, staff at a business on North Aurora Road said a man became upset after an appointment was canceled and threatened to come in anyway. Officers found no overt threats of violence. On Sept. 2, a woman came to the station to report threats from an ex and provided copies of messages. The next complaint came in on Sept. 3, when a woman reported a threatening phone call and asked for extra patrol attention at her home for the coming month. On Sept. 4, a woman on Walnut Ridge Trail said her sister was harassing her and their mother. A separate telecommunications harassment complaint came from Orchard Avenue on Aug. 29. A man told officers his ex was harassing him and posting about him on social media. Theft and Fraud A retail theft was reported on Aug. 29 at a store on South Chillicothe Road. Employees said a man was captured on video stealing merchandise. He was described as wearing a white hat, white shirt, khaki shorts and black slides. Officers checked the area but did not locate him. Fraud reports also picked up in early September. The owner of a biomedical training company said on Sept. 2 that he was scammed out of 23500 dollars, believing he was buying used medical equipment. On Sept. 4, a man reported an unauthorized withdrawal from his bank account. Arrests A warrant arrest took place on Hill Drive on Aug. 29 during a domestic dispute. A wife had left to pick up her daughter, and officers took the man into custody on an active warrant when she returned home. He later requested medical evaluation for shoulder pain before being taken to a secure area. An OVI arrest happened on Sept. 5 near North Chillicothe Road at the city limits. A caller reported a car swerving across lanes. Officers located the vehicle, conducted testing and took the driver into custody. Mental Health and Welfare Checks A 77 year old woman at a care facility on South Chillicothe Road experienced an altered mental state on Aug. 27 and attempted to wheel herself into the roadway. Staff intervened, and she was transported for evaluation. On Aug. 31, a woman left her belongings behind and walked away from a residence without shoes after an argument. She suffers from a health condition, according to the caller. Two passersby later found her walking nearby and brought her to the police station, where she requested an evaluation. Other Incidents Officers responded to a death investigation on Brandon Circle on Aug. 27. A man had not been heard from in two days, and his best friend found him deceased in his home after checking on him. A trespassing complaint came from a business on North Aurora Road on Aug. 25. Staff said a patient had been photographing other patients through windows. Officers located the woman and advised her of criminal trespass. She was also found to have an expired concealed carry permit. A civil custody dispute was reported on Aug. 29 near New Castle, where a man said his ex did not return their child at the agreed exchange location. Officers took a report. Property damage was reported on Aug. 31 near Walnut Ridge Trail after a delivery truck backed into a building, partially collapsing a wall. A fireworks complaint came from Moneta Avenue on Sept. 6. A resident said a neighbor was throwing what he described as dynamite at his house and had camera footage. Officers checked the area twice and confirmed everyone was fine. A noise complaint was filed on Sept. 8 on Aurora Hudson Road over a generator running late at night. The resident shut it off after officers made contact.
