Aurora residents to join nationwide walk for rare nerve disorder research

Dozens of people from Aurora and across Northeast Ohio will walk together Sept. 26 to support research into neurofibromatosis and schwannomatosis, a group of genetic disorders known collectively as NF. The event is part of the Children's Tumor Foundation's nationwide NF Walk season, which launched this year in cities across the country. Organizers say the goal is simple: bring people together, raise money, and push new treatments closer to reality. What is NF Neurofibromatosis and schwannomatosis cause tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. According to the Children's Tumor Foundation, NF affects about 1 in every 2,000 births, or an estimated 4 million people worldwide. The condition can lead to blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, learning challenges, chronic pain and other serious complications. Several FDA approved therapies have emerged in recent years, but there is still no cure. More than a walk For many participants, the event is about more than exercise. Families use the day to reconnect with others who understand life with NF, honor loved ones and welcome new supporters into the cause. Members of the local NF community are expected to share their own experiences with the disorder as part of the event. Alexandra Norton, the foundation's 2026 National Ambassador, described what these walks mean to the broader NF community. "The NF Walk shows what's possible when a community comes together around a shared purpose," Norton said. "We're not just walking together, we're investing in the discoveries that will change what's possible for all of us living with NF."
