AURORA, OH — In 2009, he was just another first grader at recess, a "hard worker and kind friend" who happened to love the game of football. Today, that same kid is preparing to walk through the tunnel at Super Bowl LX.AJ Barner, the standout tight end for the Seattle Seahawks, is officially headed to the Super Bowl. Following Seattle's 31-27 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship last Sunday, Barner has become the pride of "Greenmen Nation," proving that the road to NFL stardom can indeed run right through Aurora, Ohio.A Career Built on "Greenmen Pride"Long before he was catching passes from Sam Darnold in the NFL, Barner was a dominant force for the Aurora Greenmen. Under head coach Bob Mihalik, Barner was a two-way star. While he showcased his hands as a tight end, he was perhaps best known in Ohio for his defensive prowess. In his senior year, he led the Greenmen to a 13-1 record and a state semifinal appearance. His stats from that era read like a video game:Defense: 124 tackles.Offense: 4 touchdowns on 15 receptions.Accolades: Northeast Ohio Division III Defensive Player of the Year. The Journey: Indiana to Michigan to SeattleBarner's path to the pros was one of steady, relentless growth. After serving as a team captain at Indiana University, he transferred to the University of Michigan for his final collegiate season. It was there that he became a household name for college football fans, helping the Wolverines capture the 2023 National Championship.Drafted by the Seahawks in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Barner didn't take long to adjust to the speed of the professional game. After a solid rookie campaign, his 2025 season was a true breakout. Starting all 17 games, Barner hauled in 52 receptions for 519 yards and 6 touchdowns, becoming a reliable "safety valve" for the Seattle offense and a devastating blocker in the run game.Miss McArthur @KatherineMcArt1 on X (formerly Twitter)"Cheering You On!"While the rest of the world sees a 6'6", 250-pound elite athlete, many in Aurora still see the little boy who loved recess. Miss McArthur, his first-grade teacher, recently shared her excitement on social media, noting that his former classroom is "cheering him on."That sentiment is echoed across the city. Whether it's the "Aurora Greenmen Football" account celebrating his second major championship appearance in three years or neighbors reminiscing about his days on the local fields, the city is painted Green and White—with a little Seahawks Blue mixed in for good measure. What's Next?AJ Barner now looks to join an elite group of players who have won both a College Football National Championship and a Super Bowl ring. As the Seahawks prepare to face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, one thing is certain:When the ball is kicked off two weeks from now, the loudest cheers won't be coming from Seattle—they'll be coming from Aurora, Ohio.
