Portage County, Ohio - League of Women Voters Brings Tony Award-Winning Broadway Musical Suffs to Hiram College in Free Community Screening
HIRAM, Ohio — The League of Women Voters of Northern Portage County, Geauga County, and Kent will present a free public screening of the PBS Great Performances premiere of Suffs on Friday, May 8, 2026 at 7:00 PM in the Hayden Auditorium on the campus of Hiram College. The event is free and open to the public, presented in partnership with PBS of the Western Reserve, the Portage Foundation, and Hiram College.Winner of the 2024 Tony Awards for Best Musical Score and Best Book, Suffs features book, music, and lyrics by Tony Award winner Shaina Taub and was recorded from Broadway in December 2024. The musical chronicles the American suffragist movement, bringing to life the extraordinary women whose courage, sacrifice, and determination secured the right to vote for millions of Americans. The large ensemble cast includes Taub as Alice Paul, Tony winners Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells and Emily Skinner as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn, Tony nominee Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, and Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson, among many others."This event is a natural extension of everything the League of Women Voters stands for," said April Secura, President of LWV Northern Portage County. "Suffs is a stunning piece of theater, but it is also a powerful reminder of how hard women fought for the right to vote — and why civic engagement matters as much today as it did a century ago. We are honored to bring this production to our community."The screening is free and open to the public, made possible through the generous partnership of PBS of the Western Reserve, the Portage Foundation, and Hiram College. Seating in the Hayden Auditorium is limited, and tickets are required.
